The
very silly story of our Engagement day...
If
anyone wants to read some terribly sweet romance, here's
my story of how Zishan asked me to marry him.
I
am in love with a very sneaky boy.
I
had absolutely, totally, completely no clue he was going
to ask me to marry him so soon. I didn't think Z was
going to ask the big question until I was out of school,
or for another year at least.
Since
my birthday was next to Thanksgiving, Zishan decided
to make an event of it and ask me Thanksgiving day.
Unfortunately for him, we stopped by a Roy Rogers during
our trip down to his parents' house - and I came down
with a case of food poisoning so bad, I spent the night
in the hospital instead! The poor guy spent all of Thanksgiving
night, the night he'd planned to propose, sitting in
a wooden chair by my hospital bed.
But
by the next day I was well enough to go home, but still
feeling sickly, so I spent it hanging out in my PJs
and looking grubby. (I had no idea!) Later that night
Zishan started to complain about a headache, so his
mom told him to go outside and get some fresh air so
he'd feel better. (Conspiracy!)
Zishan
goes "Hey Pixie, want to take a walk with me?"
Of course, I'm still in jammies and so I make a face
and say "Normally I'd jump at going for a walk,
but it's all coooold outside." (There was snow
out there! Cold!) But Zishan looked hassled and unlikely
to walk by himself, so I changed my mind and said "okaaay,
let me go get warm stuff on." I thought a little
walking around would make him feel better after being
couped up all day working and taking care of the sick
girl who took over his bed.
I
putzed around and took my time getting dressed. I didn't
know anything important was happening! Since it was
freezing out there I even put on my gloves and a scarf
and my scruffy cold-weather-hat. I didn't even bother
putting in my contacts, just wore my glasses. Poor boy
was probably going crazy waiting for me.
But
I was ready eventually. So we went outside, and walked
up the street. I started showing him all the star constellations
I recognized, and the silly boy listened to every one.
Once
I ran out of constellations, he said "Hey, lets
go sit on one of the benches in the back yard."
Now, to get to the backyard, you have to walk through
a fence that has a little covered gateway in it. Of
course, it was pitch black so I could barely see anything.
As we were walking down the driveway towards the gate,
he told me we had to celebrate our Heart anniversary.
That's the Sunday after Thanksgiving, the day I first
gave him a little glass heart to let him know my heart
was his. Of course, I felt like swooning because he
remembered that anniversary.
Just
as we stepped through the gateway, he hugged me and
used a remote control in his pocket to turn on Christmas
lights he'd strung all over the arch! The light was
so bright that I could see him perfectly. While I was
looking up and going "Aww, it's beautiful-"
he got down on his knee and looked up at me with a serious
expression that couldn't be mistaken. Of course, I was
shocked beyond words. My brain basically went "ohmygod
ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod ohmy---oh no Zishan is asking
me and I have the ugly hat on!"
...
Okay, did I mention women are weird?
So
when he looked down to reach in his pocket, I yanked
the hat off and threw it over my shoulder. Silliest
reaction ever, I'm sure. And then I forgot everything
when he looked up, held my hand, and said "You
once said that you wanted to be asked in the woods,
with fireflies all around. Well, it's too cold for fireflies
here, but these are my fireflies for you."
I
think my world just stopped. At this point my eyes were
filled with tears, and I was shaking so hard I could
barely stand up. He held up the ring and said "You
once gave me your heart; this is my heart, and I'm giving
it to you. " And then he talked about how he
loved me and wanted to be with me every day of his life,
and asked me if I would marry him. I don't know how
I managed to speak, but I choked out a yes, and tore
off my gloves (darn gloves, darn hat!). He put the ring
on my finger.
That's
when his family started giggling like crazy from the
window, so I knew they were watching and in on the whole
thing! We stood out in the snow and hugged and kissed
for ages, and didn't feel a touch of the cold. We only
went inside because the giggling from the window sounded
like it might explode if I didn't come in and show them
the ring.
And
that's what happened my thanksgiving weekend.
